2020 Election Information – How to register to vote, online voting and early voting

Commentary · August 23, 2020

VOTING IN 2020

Last day to register to vote on Election Day is October 9.  Any person registered to vote in North Carolina and seeking to vote in an election may use any of the following methods to cast a ballot—

  1. “Absentee” or “Vote by Mail” (they are essentially the same thing)

Download a ballot request form at State Absentee Ballot Request Form OR, call the Dare County Board of Elections at 252.475.5630, ask for the form and it will be mailed to you. Fill it out and send it to Dare County Board of Elections, PO Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.

You will receive your ballot by mail.  Vote your ballot then return it in the official, pre-addressed envelope provided. To be counted, it must reach BOE by 5pm on Election Day, Nov.3.  However, mail-in ballots received by Nov. 6 will be counted if they are postmarked Nov. 3 or earlier. For more information, visit darenc.com or ncsbe.gov/voters.  You will be able to track your ballot after you mail it in.

  1. One-Stop Early Voting

This year, early voting begins on October 15 and runs through October 31.  To early vote, visit any of the three early voting polling locations in Dare County:  Kill Devil Hills Town Hall; Cape Hatteras Secondary School Auditorium in Buxton or the Administration Building in Manteo. This form of voting also allows you to register and vote on the same day if you haven’t registered already. More information here,  one-stop voting page.

Early Voting Hours

Monday-Friday, 8AM to 7:30PM

Saturday, Oct 17  8AM to 6PM

Saturday, Oct 24  8AM to 6PM

Saturday, Oct 31  8AM to 3PM

NO SUNDAY VOTING

  1. Election Day, November 3

To vote in person on Election Day, you must go to your assigned precinct polling place.  Polls will be open 6:30AM to 7:30PM.   Polling places have changed due to need of larger spaces to allow for social distancing so voters should check their precinct location for this election on Nov. 3.

OTHER ONLINE VOTER SERVICES

  • Is it true that I can register to vote online?Yes. The State Board of Elections and NCDMV now offer certain online voter registration services for existing DMV customers. If you are a DMV customer with a N.C. driver’s license or DMV-issued ID, you may now register to vote or change certain parts of your registration online.

  • What parts of my registration can be changed online? Existing DMV customers may register to vote, update their voter registration address, or update their party affiliation. They may not change their name.
