OBX Climate Rally at the Ridge

The Outer Banks faces new threats every single day including the potential of offshore drilling, changing shorelines, flooding, water quality, commercial fishing restrictions, and the potential repeal of legislation that will harm those who live and visit here and our way of life.

On Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., we will come together at Jockey’s Ridge State Park to stand up for our climate, our environment, and our planet at the First Annual OBX Climate Rally at the Ridge. The event, sponsored by Stronger NC OBX and held in solidarity with the People’s Climate March taking place in Washington, DC on the same day, will focus on the Outer Banks and send a message to the world that we care deeply about the Outer Banks and the many ecosystems that thrive here. We will march for our air, our water, our beaches, our marshes, our sounds, our marine life, our animals, our livelihoods, and all of those who live, love, and visit the great Outer Banks of North Carolina.

This event is free, family-friendly, and open to all. We welcome you to attend and share this event with others who want to preserve and protect the Outer Banks that we all hold near and dear.

SCHEDULE: The plan is to assemble at the edge of the Jockey’s Ridge State Park parking lot by 9:00 a.m. We will then march to the top of the ridge beginning at 9:15 a.m. Once there, we will fan out for aerial photographs. Signs and banners are welcome.

ACCESSIBILITY: Jockey’s Ridge is handicap accessible. If you are not familiar with Jockey’s Ridge, it would require a special beach-friendly type wheelchair. Participants can also stay at the lower portion of the ridge if they cannot climb to the top.

OUTREACH: An information tent will be available where participants can pick up literature and visit with various Outer Banks groups who are working to protect the Outer Banks and our way of life. If your group would like to participate, please contact us at strongerncobx@gmail.com.

PARKING: Parking is at the main parking lot at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Please consider carpooling.

VOLUNTEERS: We are looking for volunteers to help with logistics including set up, staffing the information tent, leading marchers to the top of the ridge, clean up, and various other tasks. If you are interested, contact us at strongerncobx@gmail.com. We’d love to have you help!
